“A record I never planned to make by a band I never intended to form”
Amongst the UK’s most visible and well-established jazz drummers, Pete Cater has a hard earned reputation for forming great bands and playing exciting, energetic jazz that appeals to audiences far beyond the specialist aficionado. Whilst best known for his hugely popular big band, an updated take on the legendary drummer/bandleaders such as Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Louie Bellson and the UK’s own Eric Delaney, this new release showcases seven top UK jazz instrumentalists, yet retains all the energy and excitement of the larger ensemble.
As well as the ubiquitous digital formats, in proper old school style, ‘Hoops’ (a tune Pete first heard when doing a BBC Radio 2 recording session on his 18th birthday) is being released as a 7 inch 45 RPM vinyl single. Its boogaloo/soul jazz vibe evokes sharp dressed mods and Northern Soul all-nighters.
“RED HOT!” says legendary club DJ Snowboy. He’s not alone in tipping this one for a hit. For good measure, the B side is a jazzy take on a classic 70s Quincy Jones disco banger.
Pete Cater did his first grown up gig for grown up money in aged 14 (“I was the biggest earner in school. Everyone else was doing paper rounds six mornings a week for a couple of quid”).
He got his start precociously early, thanks to his drummer father, who played great jazz records at home and left drums and drumsticks within easy reach (“It was never not there. Jazz drumming has been in my life pretty much since day one”)
